Embark on an action-packed day with the whole family at the National Railway Museum this May half term with our brand-new pop-up science busking shows which explore the tricks used by thieves. Hop on board a historic carriage pulled by a steam locomotive in our ever-popular steam rides or put your detective skills to the test in the Rogues Gallery.

Take a ride on board the Miniature Railway or head to Great Hall to experience the thrill of a record-breaking engine in Mallard Experience. Gaze inside the luxurious Royal Carriages in Station Hall, where you can also deploy your sleuthing skills to try solving the curious mystery of the Missing Passenger, our latest exhibition as part of Mystery on the Rails season.

Science busking

Pop-up across the museum | No booking required | Free

Discover the science behind mysteries and crimes in our brand-new pop-up science busking shows. Find out about the trickery that thieves used to confound the police in the First Great Train Robbery, and see the world in a new light as you uncover the traces that we leave behind in Detection: Then and Now.


Steam rides

Hop onto a historic carriage pulled by a steam locomotive for a ride through South Yard, immersed in the sounds and smells of steam power.

Under-12s must be accompanied by an adult. Steam rides may be subject to change.


Rogues Gallery

Think you can apprehend a criminal using just a description? At our pop-up Rogues Gallery you can discover how the introduction of the railways created a need for facial recognition as criminals used the predictability and speed of the railways to get away. Also, get your mug shot taken and added to our online gallery using #GoneRogue. Part of Mystery on the Rails season.

Create a dramatic short story based on fact or fiction using the key elements of great crime writing. Step into the shoes of a detective to uncover the details of a crime, using clues, objects from our collection and a list of known suspects to help your reader decipher whodunnit. Part of Mystery on the Rails season.


The Missing Passenger

Put your sleuthing skills to the test as you explore our new exhibition The Missing Passenger by the Geraldine Pilgrim Performance Company as part of our Mystery on the Rails season. Can you solve the mystery of the Dining Car murder? Find the clues to whittle down eight suspects to establish who killed theatre and film agent to the stars Edward Robey.

Mallard Experience

Don't miss out on our spectacular state-of-the-art 12-seater simulator ride located in Great Hall. Recreating Mallard's record-breaking run, this is the only place for you to experience the sights and sounds of the world's fastest steam locomotive - and you can now book online.

Explore the world's largest collection of royal carriages, including Queen Victoria's 'palace on wheels' and Queen Adelaide's saloon, which is the oldest preserved carriage in Europe.
