If you have questions about booking a school visit you may find some of the answers below before contacting us.

  • Do we need to book educational and non educational groups?

    All groups under 18 years old need to be booked via our group bookings line on 01904 686230.

  • What do we do if we're running late on the day?

    Please notify us as soon as possible by ringing 01904 686230.

  • Where do we go when we arrive/which entrance do we go in?

    +

    We have 2 entrances to the site but all booked groups should enter via the Car Park Entrance which is located by the turning circle opposite the main car park. Groups will be directed to the Schools Meet and Greet Area on arrival. View our map for teachers.

  • Can coaches reach the museum?

    Yes but due to low bridge limitations only single decker coaches can reach the museum. Height restrictions are 3.2m (10’9”) if approaching from the north (A59 and A19) and 3.7m (12’0”) from the city centre.

  • Where do the coaches go?

    Coaches that arrive at the museum should drop students off in the turning circle at the Car Park Entrance before either leaving or using the main car park on the opposite side of the road. Free parking is allowed for coaches and mini-buses but only while you are visiting the museum. All spaces must be booked prior to your visit.

  • Can we leave our bags anywhere?

    Bags can be stored in cages at the Schools Meet and Great Area. Codes for the cages will be provided so you can retrieve the bags at any time during your visit. We have a limited number of cages and they are on a first come first served basis.

  • Where do we have lunch?

    We have an Indoor Picnic Area in the Station Hall which needs to be booked prior to arrival. Groups are welcome to eat in the outside areas if the weather is suitable.

  • Can we take the bag cages to the lunch area?

    Unfortunately the bag cages must remain at the Schools Meet and Greet Area, however groups are able to collect their bags from the cages at any time.

  • Where are the toilets located?

    There are several toilets on site. The nearest ones on arrival are just inside the Car Park Entrance and those near the Schools Meet and Greet Area. See map for teachers or ask staff for further locations. View our map for teachers

  • How long will it take to get from the entrance to the Learning Platform?

    We recommend you allow about 5-10 minutes.

  • Where is the Learning Platform?

    +

    The Learning Platform is located at the end of the South Yard see map for teachers for location.

  • How can you pay for/book the simulator?

    The Mallard simulator has a discounted cost for schools and youth groups of £1.50 per child and adults go free. Groups must pay at the simulator. Please state at time of booking so we can co-ordinate your visit.

  • Can you go on any trains/carriages?

    We do have a limited number of vehicles open at all times. Others are opened at various times throughout the day. Check our ‘Daily Diary’ on arrival for specific times.

  • Do you have any worksheets?

    +

    Download our Great Object Hunt and discover iconic engines and hidden gems. This treasure hunt activity is designed to encourage observation and discussion.

  • Where is the shop?

    The main shop is located near the City Entrance which is between the Great Hall and the Station Hall. There is also a smaller shop near the Mallard Café in the Great Hall.

  • Do we do goody bags?

    Our gift shop can supply ready-made goody bags for your visit. For further details please contact 01904 686240 or fill in our goodie bag form to let us know what you would like.

  • How do we get around the museum? What is the best way to see everything?

    There is no designated route around the museum. There are two main parts to the site: Station Hall and Great Hall. There are other areas just off Great Hall - the Warehouse and The Works.

  • What are the key things we should look at?

    There are hundreds of objects to see in the museum but if you're only here for a short time we recommend you don't miss Mallard, the Bullet Train, Stephensons' Rocket and the Royal Carriages (see a slightly longer list). Please note that our collection changes regularly and if you want to see something specific we advise that you check with us before arrival.

  • What do we do if a child loses something? Or if a child becomes lost?
