If you have questions about booking a school visit to Locomotion, you may find some of the answers below. Please be aware the information below relates specifically to visits made by schools to museum led sessions such as 'The Right Man', and not those which are self-led.
Do we need to book school visits?+
Yes, all school visits (except self-led) must be booked in advance.
What do we do if we're running late on the day?+
Please notify us as soon as possible by ringing 01388 771430.
Where do we go when we arrive/which entrance do we go in?+
Arrive at the Collection Building car park (DL4 2RE). Signs will direct you to the entrance on the front of the building.
Where do the coaches go?+
Coaches that arrive at the museum should drop students off in the Collection Building Car Park (DL4 2RE).
Can we leave our bags and coats?+
Bags, coats and lunches can be stored in the boxes provided.
Where do we have lunch?+
Reserved picnic tables are provided for your visit.
Do you offer packed lunches?+
Yes, we offer a range of lunch options. Lunches must be booked at least 1 week in advance of the visit.
Where are the toilets located?+
Toilets are located both next to the café at the front of the Collection Building and next to the offices at the rear of the building. There are also toilet facilities in the Welcome Building.
Do you have any worksheets+
Yes, we have 5 free trails for children to use and are situated at the front of the Collection Building. All trails can be completed without leaving the building. Clipboards and pencils are provided.
Do you have a shop?+
Yes, it is located at the front of the Collection Building.
Do you offer goody bags?+
Yes, we offer party bags to all school groups. Goody bags cost £3 each must be ordered in advance of the visit.
What are the key things we should look at?+
There are hundreds of objects to see in the museum but if you're only here for a short time we recommend you don't miss the original and replica Sans Pareil, Royal carriages, Black 5 and Conservation Workshop.
What do we do if a child loses something? Or if a child becomes lost?+
Please contact ANY member of Locomotion staff.
Do you have an outdoor play area?+
Yes, we have a large railway themed play area, located at the front of the Collection building.
Are there buildings in addition to the Collection Building?+
Yes, although they can only be accessed when accompanied by a tour guide. If you would like to arrange a visit to the buildings as part of your visit, please ask when booking. Buildings include The Goods Shed, Parcels Office, Welcome Building, Soho Shed and Hackworth House.
Can we hire the use of the train as part of our school visit?+
Yes, we are happy to offer the use of our train for school groups. The use of the train costs £100 plus VAT. If you wish to hire the train, 1 month notice must be given.
