This package provides both Key Stage 1 and 2 children with a fun introduction to railway history. Following a 15 minute welcome, the package lasts approximately 90 minutes. Children each get the opportunity to take part in three, 30 minute activities.

  1. Access to cabs of selected locomotives from the National Collection.
Children get the chance to learn about some of the museum’s exciting exhibits. This includes the chance to climb aboard the footplate of one or more locomotives, discovering their history as well as how they operate.
  2. Railway object handling session
Children will get the chance to get their hands on a number of different railway objects including: a fireman's shovel, a guard's whistle, a pocket watch, and more. Find out who these objects belonged to and how they helped them do their job.
  3. Locomotive themed craft activity
Children are given the chance to cut out and assemble their own stream engine collage. Art work can be taken back to school to create a collective display, or taken home.

Activities are free of charge, and available to pre-booked school groups.
